During the economic crisis of the 1980s, Cummins Engine General Manager Henry Schacht decided that to be fair, top managers should take the biggest pay cuts. Schacht herself and the directors took pay cuts of between 12 and 15 percent, while her lowest-ranking employees took a 2 percent cut. Schacht said that was completely fair because it was the leaders who were most responsible for the company's difficult business situation, while ordinary workers had very little influence on this.
