French composer and cellist Jacques Offenbach (1819-80) was one of the originators of the operetta form. His burlesques of grand opera combined political and cultural satire and enjoyed enormous popularity from their debuts to the present day.
Antonio de Almeida was a renowned conductor and a prominent authority on the works of Offenbach.
