An apparent slave, Benjamin, must run for his life, carrying with him the burden of a promise made, along with the key to a secret strongbox. In the wilderness, he encounters John, a back-woods white boy traveling westward with his family and dog, Traveler. Together, the boys experience one rip-roaring adventure after another, learning to hunt, trap, fish, and gather to sustain their lives. The boys depend on each other as they encounter life-threatening dangers, strange characters, and laughable situations. Just when they believe the perils have passed, they must deal with the biggest threat, a rogue albino grizzly bear called 'Fire Eyes' by their new Native American friends. The bear seems to have magical powers, but Benjamin discovers its secret, and the chase is on!
