Indeed, many islanders took a certain sometimes grim pride in their trimmed-down work and life styles. They faced difficulty at times, discomfort, danger and even death. Nevertheless, they managed to endure, enjoy their life, and sometimes even prosper. Many earlier islanders and their achievements, mistakes, and life-changing moments are lost to us now, but some of their tales, and even life lessons, endure. Here are a few, and as Uncle Clarence Rutland would famously say, "It may or may not be entirely true, but it makes a good story."
