Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by reduced bone strength leading to an increased risk of fractures. It can strike at any age, although the risk for developing the disease increases consistently with age, and can affect women and men of all races and ethnic groups. A comprehensive treatment program includes not only proper nutrition, and prevention of falls, but also exercise. In fact, it has been demonstrated that exercise reduces osteoporosis-related morbidity. Therefore, some general recommendations about exercise prescription in patients with osteoporosis can be useful to optimize bone health.
