This novel was published in 1940, only two years after its distinguished author, Pearl Buck, received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first American woman to achieve this venerable status. Therefore, this work is the writer's first work with the Nobel mantle. Years earlier, she had won the Pulitzer Prize for her most famous novel of all time, The Good Earth. American writer Pearl Buck was born in 1892 to American parents who were Christian missionaries, which certainly left a clear impact on her culture and writings. Even the original title of this work of fiction (OTHER GODS) may have been quoted from one of the Ten Commandments mentioned in the Hebrew Bible in the books of Exodus 20:2 and Deuteronomy 5:6 (Thou shalt have no other gods before Me), which carries symbolic connotations and projections. It is a social and human issue that deserves a lot of deep contemplation, as it represents one of the most important intellectual themes around which the events of the novel revolve.
