Ewell credits her love of writing to her mother, Ewell Sale Stewart. She was an editor for the Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan magazines. She was an extremely successful writer and journalist. Her father Henry Bowdle Stewart was an oil tanker painter and owned the Henry Stewart Company. He was a man of high ideals and standards. They instilled in Ewell a love for life, a respect for God and a love for writing. Much of Ewell's life as a member of the duPont family is intermingled in the poetry. She was married to Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Alexis Felix duPont IV. He was also a very accomplished marine artist. His life was taken away by a tragic car accident. The impact of this taught Ewell to treasure every day that life has to offer. Those sentiments are expressed in Our Footprints in the Sand.
