Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an early English novelist who invented the epistolary novelthe novel in letters. He is best remembered today for his novels Pamela (1740), famously mocked by his contemporary and rival, Henry Fielding, in the novel Shamelaand Clarissa (1748).
