The epistle to Philemon is one of the four prison epistles, written during Paul's imprisonment in Rome. Philemon was a slave owner, not uncommon for a businessman since there were millions of slaves in the Roman Empire at that time. Many slave owners and slaves became Christians and advanced spiritually under the teaching of the apostles and other teachers of the Word. One of Philemon's slaves was Onesimus; lazy and poorly motivated for Paul mentions that "he was formerly useless" (verse 11). He was not only useless, but also entered into crime when he stole a lot of money from his master. Then with that money, Onesimus made the long journey from Asia Minor to Rome where he probably squandered it on high living and licentious behavior. ABOUT MAX

Max Klein, missionary and author, has studied under the teaching ministry of R. B. Thieme Jr., his faithful and beloved pastor for over 40 years. During that time Max has learned many biblical principles and doctrinal truths which have given him a clear understanding of the spiritual life. It is this spiritual life that Max desires to explain in an easily understandable written form via verse-by-verse commentary and messages on various theological subjects, that others may come to know the spiritual life that God has provided for all believers in Jesus Christ.

ABOUT R. B. THIEME, JR.

R. B. Thieme, Jr., pastor of Berachah Church from 1950-2003 and president of R. B. Thieme, Jr., Bible Ministries, passed through death into eternity Sunday, 16 August 2009 at 8:45 PM and is now "absent from the body and face to face with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8b).

Affectionately called 'the Colonel' by his congregation, R. B. Thieme, Jr. was the pastor of Berachah Church, Houston, Texas, until his retirement from the pulpit in 2003. His distinguished academic background includes the University of Arizona (Phi Beta Kappa) and Dallas Theological Seminary (Summa Cum Laude). His graduate studies were interrupted by World War II military service during which time he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Air Corps.

After completion of his studies, he came to Berachah Church in 1950. Extensive training in Greek, Hebrew, theology, history, and textual criticism became the foundation for his demanding professional life of studying and teaching the word of God.

Thieme's teachings are based on the original languages of scripture in the light of the historical context in which the Bible was written. He has developed an innovative system of vocabulary, illustrations, and biblical categories designed to communicate the truth of God's Word. The unique focus of his ministry concentrates on procedures for living the Christian way of life.

Books and recorded lectures by R. B. Thieme, Jr. can be ordered free of charge from R. B. Thieme, Jr., Bible Ministries. See www.rbthieme.org for details.
