Autorenporträt
Zacharias Zachariou received his MD at the University of Heidelberg and trained as a specialist in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery at the same University. In 2003 he was appointed as Chairman and Director of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Berne/Switzerland. He returned to his homeland Cyprus and established the Medical School of the University of Cyprus serving as the first Dean and Director of Studies. He His research work contributed to the application of minimal invasive surgery in children, as well as to small bowel transplantation in children and the treatment of undescended testes. He published a significant number of original contributions, has published 3 books, and 4 CDs /DVDs applying new technologies in medical education. He serves as Editor-in-Chief in the major international Journals of Pediatric Surgery. His leadership skills have been manifold both in the development of medical issues as well as the professional policy. He was foundingmember of the largest Pediatric Surgical Society worldwide, the European Pediatric Surgeons’ Association, was the President of this Society and since 2021 is an honorary member of this Association. He is a member of the Executive Board of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and was a member of the special committee for the development of the European Training Requirements for Pediatric Surgery. He has been granted several honors and awards, including the Doctor honoris causa of the Iuliu Hatieganu University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania for his support in building up Pediatric Surgery in this land and is a visiting Professor at the University of Pecs, Hungary and the University of Niš in Serbia. He has held numerous eponymous lectures, and was awarded the Honorary Membership of six medical societies.
