In actuality, 90% of the people featured in this book are descendants of slaves who were brought forcibly to the United States more than four centuries ago. it not only features African slave descendants but also descendants from many other countries of the African diaspora. Intensive academic efforts to reconstruct African American history began in the late 19th century and is discussed by. W. E. B. Du Bois in The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America. Mr. Du Bois estimates that, from 1807 to 1862, not less than a quarter of a million of Africans were brought to the United States in defiance of law and humanity.
