The book outlines the construction of a methodology called Kanga (from the Bantu for tying and untying), using three methods based on aspects of Afrolatinx ritual, articulated as spell, charm and trance. This methodology also engages with (and complicates) traditional distinctions between performance and ritual, serving as a contribution to respectful and responsible intercultural performance practices.
Kangs is designed to lead performers to a state of consciousness where reality is co-constituted by the living and the dead, drawing upon living relationships with ancestral spirits to create theatrical worlds.
