The Diary was kept by Lemuel Abijah Abbott, an officer of the Tenth Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry, Third and First Brigade, Third Division, Third and Sixth Corps respectively, Army of the Potomac. It is a brief war history as seen by a young soldier literally from the front line of battle during General U. S. Grant's celebrated campaign from the Rapidan River to Petersburg, Va., and Gen. P. H. Sheridan's famous Shenandoah Valley campaign in the summer and fall of 1864.

Lemuel Abijah Abbott (1842-1911) was an officer of the United States Army during the Civil War. Abbott joined the Army in 1862 as a private in Company B, 10th Regiment, Volunteer Vermont Infantry, of Waterbury, Vermont. During his U.S. Army career Abbott was a participant in several Civil War battles and skirmishes. After the war he served in the western United States, where he participated in actions against Indians. Abbott retired with the rank of Major.
