Produktbeschreibung
Dedicated to the memory of one of the early pioneers in this field of research, Professor Gerald T. Babcock, the 34 inclusive chapters of the present volume cover all major aspects of the molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology of Photosystem II. The chapters were variously authored by a total of 75 scientific experts from leading research centers in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, making the book a truly international effort. The book is divided into several parts which detail the protein constituents, functional sites, tertiary structure, molecular dynamics and mechanisms of subunit assembly and homeostasis. The book ends with a comparison of Photosystem II structure and function with other related enzymes and bio-mimetic systems. Since the unique water-splitting chemistry catalyzed by Photosystem II leads to the production of pure oxygen gas and the potential for making hydrogen gas, a primary goal of this book is to provide a molecular guide to future protein engineers and bio-mimetic chemists in the development of appropriate biocatalysts for the generation of clean, renewable energy from sunlight and water.

Rezensionen
From the reviews:

"...All the chapters are scholarly and provide the readers with leads into the literature through their extensive and complete references. If one examines the list of authors of this book, it is the 'who's who of photosystem II researchers in the world'. Thus this book is impressive in all aspects. Such plentiful knowledge on PS II can be explored in the bioengineering of PS II to provide photo-protection and generation of new non-polluting fuels from solar energy and water. As this is a topic of global interest nowadays, this book is informative and has been published at an appropriate time..... "(Suchi Chawla Sood and Baishnab C. Tripathy, Current Science. 2006)

"...This volume shall provide sufficient support to courses on biophysics, photophysics, photochemistry, physical biochemistry, biotechnology & nanotechnology. (Also), the readers cutting across fields shall find this book rewarding. The authors and the Editors have carried out an impressive task in bringing out this fascinating book.... " (Prasanna Mohanty, Indian Journal of Biochemistry & Biophysics. 2006)

"This book is the 22nd volume of the series 'Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration' ... . Although the concepts are discussed in the book are truly frontline, the language used is not too technical as to bar their understanding by those who are not initiated in photosynthesis. The book is, therefore, strongly recommended not only to students, teachers, and researchers ... but also to scholars of plant sciences and physicochemical sciences ... . I recommend this book to all the major libraries ... ." (G.C. Papageorgiou, Photosynthetica, Vol. 45 (1), 2006)

"Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration is a valuable series ... . this volume ... has 775 pages and content that ranges from the physiochemical properties of the electron transferring sites, its assembly, and through to the structural basis forPhotosystem II. ... This is a very valuable collection of articles, all written by leading experts and most of which will be current for several years. It ought to be available in all institutions where there is any interest in photosynthesis and electron transport." (Stuart Ferguson, The Biochemist, Vol. 29 (1), 2007)

"While there have been numerous attempts to review and summarize the progress in this field, this is the first time in recent memory that all of the leading experts have been bought together in one volume....Every topic of importance in the field is covered in chapters that are of uniformly high quality. I can't think of any topics that are superfluous or any topics that have been left out....What is especially engaging about this book is that the chapters are written in such a way that the topics are accessible to rank beginners ... as well as seasoned practitioners....(John H. Golbeck, Photosynthesis Research in press 2007)
