In 1763, King George III granted 3,000 acres of bottomland on the south side of the Monongahela River to Maj. Gen. John Ormsby for his service in capturing Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. Stuart P. Boehmig, a retired resident of the South Side, is a fifth-generation Pittsburgher. His ancestors have lived in Troy Hill, Lawrenceville, and the South Side. He developed an interest in the area's history while working in the Jones and Laughlin Mill as a college student.
