Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Kultur und Landeskunde, Note: 1,0, Technische Universität Dresden (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper takes up recent developments in Northern Irish mural paintings. A large number of images were photographed and examined in Belfast. Now, a smaller selection of these Belfast murals are explained and analysed in detail. They are also compared with images of past decades. In its course, the paper suggests that four distinctive trends can be observed within the cultural tradition of mural painting in Northern Ireland. Held against the background of the Northern Ireland conflict, these developments can be related to political and social developments. What is more, they can be interpreted as reactions to and explanations of contemporary goings-on in Northern Irish society. Thus, the paper demonstrates that murals have to be taken seriously as a form of artistic expression and a relevant aspect of ethnology and sociology. The author also concludes a significant progress in the Peace Process on both sides of the community in Northern Ireland.
