Based on a corpus of official documents (more than 60,000 words), this study is the first to answer the question about the interdependence of punctuation and syntax in Old French. Working from theoretical reflections and detailed statistical evaluations, the author demonstrates the way in which the presence and type of punctuation were bound up with the syntactic context.
