Post harvest biotechnology is providing better option in improving shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Through this technology we can create functional and fortified food with enhanced nutra and pharmaceutical value. The improved shelf life and transport tolerance ability of the horticultural crops provide high export opportunities. Through this technology we can enhance the vase life of flowers which are sensitive and high value commodities. The recent development of plant based approaches, supported by bioinformatics could lead to a step wise change in our understanding of the genetic basis of the horticultural traits and the development of practical tools and trait information for plant breeding.
