A fantastic story-warning by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, written at the turn of 1964-65. Why a warning? If only because the dangers and problems described in this book for society, for the population of an entire country, have become a kind of global reality these days. Former space marine Ivan Zhilin arrives in the resort town of some conditional Central European country. Either due to some special climatic conditions, or as a result of some very successful combination of economic circumstances, all material problems in this state have already been resolved. No one has any problems either with money, or with housing, or with food. A kind of European communism. You can work, but if there is no special desire, the state will support you anyway. You can learn something, but if you don't want to, go and have fun for free. It is better, of course, not to break the laws of the state, but if you do something, then the punishment will be rather nominal, for show. And this seemingly completely prosperous outwardly society, turns out to be completely rotten and decaying inside. Someone arranges crazy entertainment in the dungeons and tunnels of an abandoned subway. Someone constantly arranges demonstrations and protests for the most ridiculous reasons, for example, hairdressers demand to continue filming a famous television series. But the worst thing is that the newfangled drug has fallen ill. Everyone knows about it, but no one speaks openly - because dependence on it is completely invisible, outwardly invisible, but already incurable. After all, first of all, you need to want to give up a little. But the fact of the matter is that less and less people already want this in this happy European country ..
