This book presents the proceedings of the Annual Congress of the Asia-Pacific Society for Artificial Organs (APSAO) 2023, which focuses on multidisciplinary advances and innovations in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal support systems. This collection of articles covers three main themes that are closely related to advances in artificial organs: (i) digital health and numerical simulation (ii) Design, development, evaluation and clinical translation and (iii) Biomaterials and tissue engineering. The conference showcased speakers from different countries in the Asia-Pacific region presenting their cutting-edge research on the designs, development, and evaluation of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal support systems. In addition, the readers are expected to gain an insightful view on the current needs for artificial organs research and development, as well as the steps needed for successful translation from concept into clinical practices. Specifically, the book willdeliberate the key challenges associated with the design and development of artificial organs, their clinical translation as well as patient management in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Mohd Jamil Mohamed Mokhtarudin received a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering from Universiti Malaya in 2012 and then continued a DPhil in Engineering Science at Wolfson College, Oxford University from 2013 to 2017. He is now serving as a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Manufacturing and Mechatronic Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah. His research expertise is in the area of mathematical modelling and computational simulation of the human organ and biological system involving structural mechanics, fluid-structural interface, and multiphysics and multiscale modelling.
Dr. Azam Ahmad Bakir is a Mechanical Engineering Lecturer in the University of Southampton Malaysia. He has received his PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia. His works previously involved with the development of a framework for simulating Multiphysics phenomena of human heart, namely cardiac electrophysiology, myocardial mechanics and intraventricular haemodynamic, where the physics interaction is necessary for an efficient heart function. In addition to heart modelling, Dr. Azam is also involved with studying the effect various electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) protocols using computational model, to enhance the efficacy of ECT in treating patients with severe depression. His research interest is in the field of computational modelling of biological tissues and organs, with the goal of providing a safer testbed for future experimentation and designing better medical treatment.
Dr. Andrew Stephens is a Research Fellow at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Monash University, Australia. He is currently investigating the improvement of mechanical cardio-respiratory and smart emergency medical devices through sensing, monitoring, control, and AI. He is the deputy director of CREATElab (Cardio-Respiratory Engineering And TEchnology laboratory) situated at the Victorian Heart Hospital. He is also a council member for the Asia Pacific Society of Artificial Organs.
Dr. Nadiah Sulaiman is a senior lecturer at Centre for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (CTERM), Faculty of Medicine UKM. She is currently CTERM Head of Academic Frontiers overseeing and coordinating postgraduate students and courses offered in CTERM. Nadiah obtained her doctoral degree at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, UK. Her research work revolves around vascular and cardiovascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
