The 'protest elections' of 2012-13 in Italy and Greece produced record-breaking electoral volatility, the decline of bipolarism and the transformation of national patterns of government formation. Analyses of these startling electoral contests is complemented by studies of two key challenger parties, Beppe Grillo's Five Star Movement in Italy and Golden Dawn in Greece and a comparative overview of the process of political convergence between Italy and Greece apparently triggered by the economic crisis.
