Its lengthy interaction with the United States has resulted in the long-term acquisition of expanded legal rights and relative political stability. Ramón Bosque-Pérez is a Researcher at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, The City University of New York. José Javier Colón Morera is Professor of Political Science at the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras. Bosque-Pérez and Colón Morera have also coedited Las Carpetas: Persecución politica y derechos civiles en Puerto Rico.
