An introductory chapter provides an overview of the evolution of multi-wave mixing as well as basic physical concepts and mathematical techniques. A comprehensive and systematic framework is used to guide readers through the versatile range of effects and techniques associated with multi-wave mixing. These include Autler-Townes splitting of wave mixing, the controllable suppression and enhancement, and the switching of an atomic medium between transparent and absorptive states. Applications of the phenomena and techniques discussed are presented as motivation at the beginning of each chapter, while instructive exercise sections support a hands-on understanding of even complicated issues.
