Quantum Reality by Jim Baggot A theory is only abandoned when a clearly better theory looms on the horizon to take its place. We can conclude from this that scientific theories are never debunked and, as was the case here, only ultimately turn out to be inferior when compared to competing alternatives. Even then, it is clear that debunked theories can persist. We know that Newton's laws of motion are inferior to quantum mechanics in the microscopic world of molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, and they also collapse when objects, regardless of their size, move at the speed of light or at speeds approaching the speed of light. However, Newton's laws are still quite satisfactory when applied to everyday situations and ordinary objects, and physicists and engineers happily make use of them even when they know that they are "not true."
