This volume presents a collection of twenty-five peer-reviewed articles carefully selected from the contributions presented at the XXV Congress of the Portuguese Statistical Society (2021). Containing state-of-the-art developments in theoretical and applied statistics, the book will be accessible to readers with a background in mathematics and statistics, but will also be of interest to researchers from other scientific disciplines (e.g., biology, economics, medicine), who will find a broad range of relevant applications.

She is currently an elected member of the board of directors of the Portuguese Statistical Society (2021-2023). Over the years she has regularly collaborated as an enterprise consultant and as an integrated member on national and international research projects. She has been responsible for planning and coordinating over 20 advanced courses in Statistics, and has collaborated as Editor and referee for several international peer-reviewed journals. Her main research interests include Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Multivariate Statistics, and Machine Learning models. Lígia Henriques-Rodrigues is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department, School of Science and Technology at the University of Évora (Portugal) and a researcher in the Center of Mathematics and Applications, Institute for Research and Advanced Training at the same institution. She has collaborated as referee for several international peer-reviewed journals. Her main research interests are Statistics of Extremes, Nonparametric Statistics, and Computational Statistical Methods with applications to Life Sciences, Environment, Risk, Insurance and Finance. Russell Alpizar-Jara is a professor and a former director of the Mathematics Department, School of Science and Technology and a researcher in the Centre of Mathematics and Applications, Institute for Research and Advanced Training at the University of Évora (Portugal). He is particularly interested in narrowing the gap between theory and applications, and often works in interdisciplinary groups. His research interests include Sampling Animal Populations, Population Dynamics Modelling, and Statistical Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries. In previous years, he has served as Elected Board and General Assembly Board member of the Portuguese Statistical Society. Miguel de Carvalho is the former Director of the Centre for Statistics of the University of Edinburgh (2019-2021) and the President of the Portuguese Statistical Society (2021-2023). Miguel's eclectic research interests include, inter alia, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Econometrics, Risk Analysis, and Statistics of Extremes. He has collaborated as an Associate Editor for a variety of top tier journals such as The American Statistician , The Annals of Applied Statistics, and the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
