In his introduction to this 1865 volume, the author indicates his method by writing that "civilization, being a process of long and complex growth, can only be understood when studied through its entire range." His thesis is that all culturesboth in the present and long agohave to be studied as parts of a single history of human thought. Autorenporträt

Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917) was a British anthropologist considered to be the founder of cultural evolutionism. He reintroduced the term animismor, soul to the field. A powerful advocate of the unity of humanity across apparent divides of race and culture, Tylor was strongly influenced by Darwin in formulating his theory of an evolutionary relationship between so-called primitive and civilized cultures.
