Retreat From Rostov was hailed as one of the best World War II novels written while WWII was still raging. It presents a most unique view into the lives of civilians and military officers and enlisted men from both sides in what was, up to that time, believed to be the greastest battle in the history of the world -- the Battle of Rostov, during which for the first time the armies of Hitler were defeated.
