In the comedy "Revisor" Gogol brought Russian characters to the stage and exposed public vices and social ulcers: bribery, embezzlement, fever, common among government officials. The main idea of ¿¿the work is the vices of society, bureaucracy and its lawlessness, hypocrisy, spiritual poverty, universal stupidity. The author reminds of the inevitable spiritual retribution that every man should expect. The main idea can be taken as a proverb: "There is nothing to complain about a mirror when the spade is crooked."
