As someone who grew up in a family of professional singers, I learned at an early age about the power of music to move people, to make people cry, to inspire change, to inspire this big blue marble that spins around the universe we call a planet I realized that music could do all those things.

My mom and dad both accomplished vocalists and entertainers would often break out in a song at family gatherings, and my sister and cousins, and I would join in with our off-key harmonies. We were a musical family, and it was fun. And I always felt that we were in sync when we were singing, but when we weren't singing, it was tough.

We fought a lot my parents fought, my sister and I fought, and it just seemed like whoever roared the loudest would win the battle that was how a lot of my childhood went, But as much as I loved music, I didn't feel like I had rhythm in my own life. I struggled with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and even today I sometimes feel frozen around people it seemed like no matter what I did, I couldn't get into a steady groove in life.

That all changed when I discovered the eighties rock with bands like Journey, Boston Aerosmith, foreigner, and Survivor. The cars, J Geils Chicago. And so apropos that I am traveling Florida now in a Chicago tribute band as the lead singer of a band called Pieces of Eight. I found that music spoke to me on a deeper level.

The lyrics were anthems of empowerment and resilience, and the melodies were like lightning bolts. And it's so interesting that I live in Tampa and I'm a huge lightning bolt hockey fan. The music electrified my spirit. I wore out my albums, my cassettes, and my eight tracks. If you're, if you're old enough and remember eight tracks playing them over and over and over again sometimes they would get stuck or in the same groove, or I had to rewind it and put it on play.

And then put it on pause, and then fast forward and rewind. But no matter how many times I listened to the music, it never lost its power. It wasn't the music that inspired me, only though it was the stories behind the music, the struggles, the triumphs, and the ups and downs of the artists who wrote them.
