Autorenporträt

Alfred John Church (1829–1912) was an esteemed English classical scholar and writer, renowned for his contribution to the dissemination of classical literature through English translations. Church was born in London and attended Lincoln College, Oxford, where he studied Classics and graduated with first-class honours. After a period of teaching at various schools, including Merchant Taylors' and President of The Royal Society of Literature, he became professor of Latin at University College, London. Church is perhaps most well-remembered for his engaging retellings of ancient works that sought to make classical stories accessible to young readers of English. In 'Roman Life in the Days of Cicero' (1883), Church presents a vivid picture of social, political, and domestic aspects of Rome during the time of the renowned orator and statesman.
