This story is set in Perth, Western Australia. Al Connor has to decide what he is going to do with his life. He isnt the cleverest of blokes, but he has a way with solving problems. His father suggested he join the army as at least he will get fed and have clothes to wear and something to do. Well, he joins up, and soon he is sent to Afghanistan, where he excels in the field. He hates authority and wonders why they never understand what goes on out on the battlefield. He befriends many men, and they form a bond that will help them survive together. With the skills he displays, he is soon decorated for his heroism, but he doesnt want the medals and the praise, he says. He is just doing what he is ordered to do. Others see it differently and respect this brave Aussie soldier. He thinks he isnt the best-looking bloke and wonders if he will ever get a girlfriend or even get married. Circumstances arise where he is put in front of different women, and he wonders if he is being given the chance to find his true love. Life never runs smoothly with its twists and turns. Who knows what is ahead of him?

Autorenporträt
Author Darryl Moss I was born in Calcutta India on 15 January 1949. I am of Anglo-Indian background. My family migrated to Perth, Western Australia, arriving on 25 January 1954. I have spent my life growing up in Perth. I have been married twice and have had no children of my own. From my second marriage, I have two stepchildren-a girl and boy-who are adults now. My stepdaughter, who is married, has two children-a girl and a boy. My education has been done in Perth, and I became a draftsman because I was good at drawing. I finished a diploma in civil engineering part-time at night school. I began work in the Western Australian Railways and then moved on to the Water Authority of Western Australia. I then moved into the private sector and worked at different businesses until I decided that I had had enough and retired. I have always liked to write stories. I would write them down, and it was hard to edit them. Now that I can sit down and actually spend more time with my thoughts and get them down on the computer, I feel I am happier creating stories while my wife gets on with her sewing. I love the use of a computer as I remember building computer kits when I was in my twenties. They were hard to program, and most of the time, they just had a matrix of flashing lights. Now I have a 3.1 GHz chip with 6 GB of DRAM with all-in-one A3 printer, scanner, and fax machine. The best thing in this computer age is being able to e-mail documents and messages all over the world. The future is coming, and I hope I am here to greet it. (Bring it on.)
