Even free women have something to fear: their number coming up the city's Defilement Lottery when anybody who can claim them can make intimate use of them. It is no place for a pretty and innocent woman from the provinces, and yet Danielle Gironde has come to Sadoville searching for her missing sibling Beatrice, surrendering her pride and modesty as she does so. She has been working in a Chastisement Shop posing naked and bound in its window as a living advert for its wares and then demonstrating sex toys and punishment devices for customers in its back room who may hire the use of her body to try them out on. Desperate for more money, she even spends a day off in an art gallery displaying sculptures that feature naked women trapped within them all the while interacting intimately with their critics. Then Danielle finds a new line of work that, for select paying clients, bypasses the rules of the lottery system.
