2012 NAPPA Gold Winner - Who says children don't come with handbooks?

This quick how-to guide offers practical tips for communicating effectively, setting boundaries like walls and using acknowledgments instead of constant praise.

Loaded with real-life examples and playful illustrations, it tells you exactly how to "say what you see" to start from where the child is - in the here and now - and provide guidance from there.

"If you've ever been confused as a parent or teacher about what to say or how to respond to your child, then this book is for you. It's short enough to re-read again and again, which is lucky, because you'll want to." -- Lawrence J. Cohen, PhD, author of Playful Parenting

"SAY WHAT YOU SEE: An easy parenting strategy that really works." -- Dr. Laura Markham, Aha! Parenting

"This book is interesting and easy to read. It has great illustrations to keep the reader engaged in excellent material. Not too much and not too little. I absolutely loved reading this book." -- Stephanie Mihalas, PhD, NCSP, founder of The Center for Well-Being, 2012 NAPPA judge

"So concise. There's more on each page of this little book than in all the other parenting books I've ever read." -- Teresa, Parent, Waco, TX

"I've been saying what I see with my children this week, and I am seeing some incredible changes already. I cannot believe all the hugs, kisses, and I love you's - and I have ENJOYED my children in an amazing way!" -- Jenn, Parent, Austin, TX

Autorenporträt
Sandra Blackard, award-winning author and parenting expert, is the Founder of Language of Listening®. She has a unique ability to help adults see the world the way children see it and make sense of what children say and do. Coupled with her gift of simplification, Sandy's work makes complicated psychological concepts seem virtually self-evident.

Her career as a parent educator began in 1992 after she was taught to use with her own children the concepts and skills practiced by play therapists. Her mentor was Dr. Garry Landreth, Founding Director of the Center for Play Therapy, University of North Texas, Denton. Through relentlessly sharing with other parents what she had learned that allowed previously clinging Colleen to go skipping off to Kindergarten without looking back and 3-year-old Betsy to brush her teeth without a defiant, "No!" SAY WHAT YOU SEE® was born.

In the process, Sandy developed a manual for parent training that served as a model for Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) Treatment Manual (2006) which she co-authored with Drs. Landreth, Bratton, and Kellam. SAY WHAT YOU SEE® for Parents and Teachers is a 2012 NAPPA gold winner (National Parenting Publications Awards).

Sandy, her husband Patrick and their two daughters call Austin, Texas, home. She can be contacted at: www.languageoflistening.com.
