'Scraps' is a work of fiction spanning the years from the end of the Civil War through World War II. Jake Conner returns to his Arkansas home from the war to receive a quilt made for him by his wife Sue. That quilt will be handed down from parent to child, generation to generation. The owners of the quilt will see life in all its fullness, for better or worse. It will travel with them from the remote soil of Arkansas to the burgeoning city of Dallas. It will experience wealth and society in Boston and violence and bloodshed in Chicago. The manuscript ends with Scraps being sealed in an attic trunk and forgotten for a while before being rediscovered and finding a new home.
