In the not-so-distant future of 2225, the Earth has been ravaged by the catastrophic effects of climate change. Once-fertile lands have turned to dust, crops have withered, and the delicate balance of nature has been upended. In a desperate bid to preserve what remains of the planet's biodiversity, a network of seed repositories has been established, serving as arks for the world's plant life.

Among the towering ruins of what was once a bustling metropolis, Dr. Maya Patel hurried through the debris-strewn streets towards the entrance of the seed repository. The setting sun cast an eerie glow on the dilapidated buildings, a stark reminder of the world that once was.

As she reached the heavy steel doors, Maya glanced back at the city skyline, barely visible through the thick smog that hung in the air. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead, and entered the repository.

Inside, rows upon rows of shelves stretched out before her, each one meticulously organized and labeled with the names of plant species long thought extinct in the wild. The soft hum of machinery filled the air as technicians moved about, tending to the precious seeds stored within climate-controlled chambers. This was one of a dozen repositories scattered across the country.

"Dr. Patel, you're just in time," a young technician called out as Maya made her way towards the central control room. "We've detected some irregularities in Sector 7

I was born in England, but have lived in Southern California for many years. I m now retired and live in the Pacific NW in a little seaside city amongst the giant redwoods and wonderful harbor, almost at the Oregon border. My husband and I have one cat, called Midnight and she is featured in two of my latest Sci-Fi short stories. I love Science Fiction, animals, and trying to help others.
