The book "Al-Bayan wal-Tabyin" is considered one of Al-Jahiz's most widely circulated and most useful books. Ibn Khaldun said in it: "We heard from our sheikhs in the educational councils that the foundations of the art of literature and its pillars are four collections, namely: Adab al-Katib by Ibn Qutaybah, Kitab al-Kamil by al-Mubarrad, and Kitab al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin by al-Jahiz. And the Book of Anecdotes by Abu Ali Al-Qali, and everything other than these four, so it is affiliated with it and branches from it. Abu Hilal Al-Askari describes Al-Bayan and Al-Tabyen as "many in benefits, a great many benefits, because of the noble chapters, gentle verses, wonderful sermons, brilliant news, and the names of orators and rhetoricians it contains, and what it indicates of their qualities in eloquence and public speaking, and other of its chosen arts. And its adjective is commendable. However, the clarification of the limits of eloquence and the parts of statement and eloquence are spread throughout its complications and scattered throughout it. They are lost among the examples and are only found through long contemplation and extensive browsing. The book is considered the oldest and most important attempt to study rhetoric and the philosophy of language. Al-Jahiz is considered a pioneer in this field for those who came after him, such as Ibn Faris, Ibn Jinni, and Al-Suyuti. Al-Jahiz limited the types of statement to five, neither more nor less, namely speech, gesture, contract, calligraphy, and adverb.
