"Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird, That cannot fly." - Langston Hughes

Lindsay Ziehl MBE was born in London within the sound of Bowbells. At the age of 6, the family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she spent her formative years. In 1969, she was crowned Miss Victoria. A year later she met her late husband. Their son, Andrew Ziehl, was born in Melbourne in 1971. They lived in Perth before moving to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in 1977 before relocating again in 1979, this time to Durban, South Africa. Here she survived her first cancer diagnosis. In 1999, she was again diagnosed with breast cancer. Following her treatment, she moved to Port Elizabeth in 2001, where she has remained ever since. After many years of dedicated service with victims of domestic abuse, Ziehl received an Honour MBE from the late Queen Elizabeth II for her work in this field. It is these years of experience that taught Ziehl the value and importance of empowering people who have survived these often life-threatening situations. The tragic loss of her son Andrew in 2020 motivated Ziehl to start a foundation in his name, and the Andrew Ziehl Foundation was born. The foundation works to remember Andrew by embodying his kindness, gentle nature, and giving spirit. The foundation supports those brave people who have taken the difficult and challenging steps to leave and prosecute their abuser. As well as her hands-on work, Ziehl has spent many years educating people, giving presentations, and writing articles about domestic violence, shedding light on this enormous societal problem. Her belief is that information and understanding is key to exposing domestic abuse. She further highlights the importance of empowering the abused to remove themselves safely from dangerous situations, and reconnect with their sense of self-worth and confidence. Shine a Light is, as Ziehl intends, an exposé. It is a reference book, a guide, a go-to for information, understanding and opportunity. This is not just a 'what-is', but also a 'how-to' guide on navigating this topic: how to identify abuse, how to assist someone who is in an abusive situation, and how to leave an abusive situation safely. This book is the culmination of Ziehl's life's work and experience, sharing the powerful impact she has made on so many lives and her desire to save as many people as she can. All proceeds from this book will be used within the Andrew Ziehl Foundation to grow its reach and capacity to support domestic abuse survivors.
