To repressed people the idea of living in a free country where the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can become a reality drives them to extraordinary heights and well as test the very fabric of their being. Carlos believes "he" is what the American dream is all about. The chance to thrive in a country whose form of government is by and for its people. The chance to live an ideal such as this turns this illegal immigrant's search for freedom into the plight for oppressed people everywhere who want nothing more than the chance to shine bright in a better world.
