In this volume Roland Scheel paints a completely new picture of the cultural relations between the Byzantine Empire and the Scandinavian countries, and shows that the respective "otherness" led to a new and powerful semantic cipher around the year 1200. This priming proved to be so important that it provided an identity that lasted throughout the entire Middle Ages and up to modern times. This study is complemented by a comprehensive index of sources.
