Pat Clauson was a glib-talking Australian who relocated to the United States, determined to make his living screwing small-to-medium startup companies of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of dollars. He used his smooth talk, fictitious contacts with a British bank and Hong Kong law firm, and financial savvy to con the companies into giving him signature rights to their bank accounts, a monthly consulting fee that he collected for doing nothing of any constructive consequence, as well as hundreds of shares of their newly issued stock, which he promoted illegally to hike the share price so…mehr
Pat Clauson was a glib-talking Australian who relocated to the United States, determined to make his living screwing small-to-medium startup companies of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of dollars. He used his smooth talk, fictitious contacts with a British bank and Hong Kong law firm, and financial savvy to con the companies into giving him signature rights to their bank accounts, a monthly consulting fee that he collected for doing nothing of any constructive consequence, as well as hundreds of shares of their newly issued stock, which he promoted illegally to hike the share price so he could sell out, pocket a small fortune, then disappear like a bad dream to strike someplace else. He got away with it until he crossed swords with a client's wife and his administrative assistant. The two women smelled a rat pretty early in his relationship with a growing aeronautic supply firm: the wife because of her worry about the financial security of her family, and the admin assistant because Pat couldn't keep his mind off her body. He got nailed by, of all people, the owner of a solid waste disposal company who had the kind of connections Pat had never encountered before. The lead character in Smooth Talkin' Bastard is actually based on a person known to the author. The real con artist died several years ago when he did a face plant in his soup during a meeting.

Autorenporträt
Donald A. Dery began his writing career as a reporter for a metropolitan daily newspaper, also assisting United Press International with election coverage during John F. Kennedy's last Senate campaign. He shifted to the corporate side of communications with a leading U.S. consumer products company, writing dozens of cover stories and feature articles for professional journals serving a broad cross-section of industries. He was transferred to London to manage the firm's corporate and product communications in twelve European countries, supervising the staffing and development of strategic marketing communications programs targeting specific consumer audiences. Upon his return to the United States, he was delegated responsibilities for the formation of a professionally staffed marketing and corporate communications department and personally handled the company's corporate and financial communications, including its interface with the New York Stock Exchange and the nation's leading business and financial magazines and newspapers. His achievements include cover stories on Time, Life, Fortune, Forbes, Business Week, and features in the nation's leading daily newspapers. Don then joined a major New York advertising agency, where he established two wholly-owned subsidiaries: a business-to-business agency and a retail marketing services organization that helped mass-market consumer companies increase their product exposure in the nation's leading chain stores. As an independent consultant, he provided strategic planning and corporate communication services to a leading northeast bank as well as a variety of New England based high-tech companies. He is a voracious reader of nonfiction histories, with a substantial library of American presidential biographies, autobiographies and memoirs, American military history, and American journalism and social studies. Smooth Talkin' Bastard is Don's first novel. He resides in Newport, Rhode Island, and Antigua, West Indies, with his wife, Rowena.
