Spatial Navigation: A Review of Recent Research examines the decline in spatial navigation ability with age, presenting a review of the current literature discussing the various cognitive and biological factors. Specifically, the authors provide an overview of the role of working memory, attention, and spatial ability in the changes observed in spatial navigation. This compilation also presents a follow-up on the study conducted by Rusconi and colleagues in 2015 which aimed to investigate the different processes involved in spatial navigation in patients with mild cognitive impairment, amnesic and non-amnesic. Following this, the effect of estradiol levels on spatial orientation skills is investigated. The results indicate that estradiol concentrations predict a woman's ability to form a cognitive map. Lastly, the authors review and critically discuss the taxonomy for differentiating different subtypes of developmental topographical disorientation patients. Suggestion for future studies are also provided.
