Children learn to love reading at a very early age. Parents and siblings read them stories at bedtime or just while relaxing in a chair. When books were scarce, storytelling filled this gap. Reading changes a person from being focused on immediate concerns to looking to the past and the future. Kathryn Carpenter has been interested in reading since starting school back in the days before computers. Of special interest to her is historical fiction. Since moving to southern Colorado, she has immersed herself in trying to understand the people who lived in this coal-mining area. She is presently an associate professor at Trinidad State Junior College, teaching in the nursing department. Her personal history includes teaching in elementary education, ministering in pastoral services, and serving in health care. Combining these rich personal experiences enabled her to write these stories of historical fiction in the hopes that they bring the reader closer to experiencing life from the eyes of the children living in the coal camps in 1900.
