Jason would only find out much later about The Stream. The Stream is a powerful but unpredictable force undulating through time and space that, given proper technology and native skill, can be used to travel through time and space. Malcolm was a very powerful Stream Master who, with a team of historical researchers, had been stranded on Earth with limited resources for over 60 years. They had been sent to Earth on a research project just before the start of the Second World War and were stranded due to a tragic accident that may not have been an accident. The surviving members of the team were desperate to find a way to return home. Convincing Jason to build a simulation to interact with The Stream was the latest in a long line of attempts Malcolm had quietly made to return home, all of which had failed catastrophically.

However, a few researchers in the stranded group were neither patient nor covert. The brothers Schultz used their knowledge of Stream Technology and Earth history to aid the Nazi effort to create super-weapons. They were able to convince the German leadership to help them find the exotic materials and skilled labor needed to build a device to access The Stream, which was partially successful. They were desperate people with flawed morals willing to do anything necessary regardless of the consequences.

Far away from Earth at the Stream Guild planet, all efforts to retrieve the research team had long been abandoned under the assumption that all had been killed in the Portal explosion decades ago even though there were sometimes twitches of The Stream in the Earth Sector. Guild Leadership was consumed by in-fighting between groups that wanted to limit access to The Stream to just research and observation and a small but vocal minority that wanted to use The Stream to change the past to control the future.

Using breadcrumbs left by Malcolm, Jason slowly begins to understand and eventually master the Portal time travel technology, getting inexorably sucked into a dangerous world of intrigue where people are rarely who they seem to be. He discovers what he must do to save the Earth and perhaps the entire universe.
