In June 1942, fighters of the special-purpose partisan detachment "Winners" of the Fourth Directorate of the NKVD under the command of Dmitry Medvedev landed in the Zhitomir region. Among those who landed was the legendary intelligence officer Nikolai Kuznetsov. Operating from June 1942 to March 1944 on the territory of central and western Ukraine, D. N. Medvedev's detachment carried out over 120 major operations, destroyed a number of high-ranking officials of the occupation regime (11 generals and senior government officials), up to 2,000 German soldiers and up to 6,000 police officers and Ukrainian nationalists... The author spoke about this and many other things in detail and honestly in his book "It Was Near Rovno" (1948), which was republished in an expanded edition in 1951 under the new title "Strong Spirits."
