This textbook is intended as a means for the development of textual competence in second-language students at the upper intermediate and advanced levels when approaching literary texts, especially narrative ones. By means of a linguistic tool such as structures of modificationwords, phrases, clauses, and even sentences functioning as modifiersit explores actions and descriptions in the narrative process as seen in the short story. Modification, as the late Francis Christensen showed, generates meaning in creative writing. With these ideas and aims in mind, the book has been structured in five chapters including (1) a review of the English sentence, (2) the expansion of the sentence by coordination, (3) the expansion of the sentence by modification, (4) structures of modification of nouns and verbs and (5) the shaping of the image proposed by the verb and the noun, in other words actions and descriptions.

Autorenporträt

Ángel Francisco Sánchez Escobar, nacido el 21 de noviembre de 1951, se licenció en Filología Hispánica y Filología Anglogermánica por la Universidad de Sevilla, su ciudad natal. Completó estudios de Máster en Literatura Hispano-americana, Máster en Pedagogía y Doctorado en Didáctica del Inglés en Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Estados Unidos), donde fue Profesor de Español durante seis años (1978-84). Al regresar a España, obtuvo dos nuevos doctorados en la Universidad de Sevilla, uno en Filología Inglesa (debido a sus estudios de Vanderbilt) y, otro, en Literatura Española. En dicha universidad, trabajó como profesor durante casi treinta años. Tiene también un Doctorado en Teología de St. Stephen Harding Theological College and Seminary (Winston-Salem, North Carolina, EE.UU) y otros muchos estudios teológicos. Fue ordenado Interfaith Minister en New York, Estados Unidos (2004), presbítero en Kiev, Ucrania (2005) y consagrado obispo en Sudáfrica (2007).
