#1 The city of Durham, North Carolina, was beginning to stir to a new work week on this Monday morning. High-intensity lights still illuminated nearly deserted downtown streets. The sweet, pungent aroma that always hovered in the air was stronger than usual.

#2 One of Durham's most prosperous northern suburbs, Fox Drive, was the scene of a shooting. A shrill, piercing beep startled architect Doug Griffin from his sleep. He rushed to the house and found a boy barely in his teens standing in the doorway.

#3 A neighbor, James Wingate, came into the room carrying his trauma box. He began recording vital statistics as Griffin and another rescuer, Bob Hunt, turned Russ's head to begin suctioning the blood and mucus from his air passages.

#4 The first responders were very worried about the patient, but they were also very concerned about the cocked pistol still lying on the bed. If it had gone off once, might it not do so again.
