Set in contemporary New England, Swimming Backwards, a literary novel, tells the story of Joanna Turnus, a gender-fluid lawyer, and Alexander Morgan, an ambitious construction worker determined to become the youngest president of the AFL-CIO. Produktbeschreibung
Set in contemporary New England, Swimming Backwards, a literary novel, tells the story of Joanna Turnus, a gender-fluid lawyer, and Alexander Morgan, an ambitious construction worker determined to become the youngest president of the AFL-CIO. They have nothing in common (at least initially) except working for General Construction. Founded by Joanna's grandfather, General is the largest (and fastest growing) construction company in Massachusetts. Yes, Joanna and Alexander meet; and yes, they eventually fall in love.

Although inspired by my experiences as a non-binary person and a construction laborer, Swimming Backwards transcends the narrow intersection of gender identity and blue-collar work and speaks to all of us: It is a novel of hope and ambition, love and betrayal, family and acceptance, and self-fulfillment. It is a love story for the 21st century.

Autorenporträt
When I was younger, I cursed God for my long, sleepless nights, nights that seemed like days, days that seemed like months, not knowing if I was male or female. But now I'm thankful to be non-binary, for it has given me a creative edge, a humility, a sense of humor, a willingness to listen to the rain, and a desire to help the marginalized. My previous (nonfiction) book Rebuild: The Economy, Leadership, and You: A Toolkit for Builders of a Better World, offers a hopeful recipe for tackling our interconnected crises by reimagining ourselves, our organizations, and our economies. Just like being male and female has enabled me to become a more compassionate human being, writing both fiction and nonfiction has enabled me to become a better writer, teacher, listener, friend, and parent (Elizabeth and Patrick). I live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with my son Patrick, two cats, and a dog.
