It had been three days since the air raid sirens had wailed their last cry of terror. The first forty eight hours of silence had been in anticipation of another air raid while the citizens of Berlin remained close to their homes huddled in air raid shelters as they had almost without let up for the last few months.

Crews of workers, both volunteer and conscripted, labored continually, day and night to clear rubble and search for survivors or bodies, though more often than not, they found only bodies in the ruins. Glorious Berlin was crumbling under the heavy heel of allied bombing and the Germans knew that the war would end soon, and they would again be the losers. They paid little attention to the booming voices over the radio and loudspeakers that proclaimed an impending Nazi victory.

By noon on the third day of the bombing silence, however, rumors filtered through the city, slowly at first. Some said that the Russian army was nearing the eastern limits of the city. The news stunned Erika Heitelah when she heard it. She had grown up in a Nazi Germany, and now perhaps, she would have a chance to see its end.
