Derek E. Bowman is a D.O./Ph.D. student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. Derek wrote this heartwarming story in high school when he always dreamed of becoming both a doctor and a published author. While the road to medical school was not easy-Derek applied for admittance three years in a row before finally being accepted-he continued to work hard and believe in himself. Derek hopes that the story of Sammy the Shrimp will inspire others to pursue their dreams. On the rare occasion when Derek is not studying medicine, he enjoys watching nature documentaries, playing chess, and tending to his plants. In the future, Derek hopes to work as a physician and medical researcher. Go Green!
