An illegal super-drug called 'Clarity,' unlike any drug before it causes widespread and unrelenting addiction. Crime spikes and prisons endure catastrophic overcrowding. Conditions are so horrific that large numbers of inmates commit suicide or attempt to escape hoping to die in the process. Ultimately, the 'Alcatraz Option' provides a solution to overcrowding. An inmate exercising the Option can gain freedom immediately in exchange for undergoing a chemo-like treatment that will age him by the length of his term. Alcatraz, a prison once again, is the first place to offer the Option. Throughout the decades, the lives of three principal characters intertwine. Hector Morales, formerly a banker and socialite, now heads a Mexican drug cartel. Rebecca Levy becomes a noted scientist but also the object of an overwhelming and irrational obsession that has gripped Morales since they had a summer romance decades earlier as teenagers. Daniel Levy, is Rebecca's husband, is a war hero framed by Morales frames for her murder. Hoping to rekindle Rebecca's feelings for him, Morales abducts her, and with her reluctant help, develops a super-drug. When Daniel, sentenced to life, learns of Rebecca's fate, he exercises the Option and sets off to rescue her but not as he was, young and strong, but as an old man. Daniel is unaware that she and Morales are lovers once again. In the violent confrontation between Morales and Daniel, Rebecca, with gun in hand, makes a life-or-death choice between her lover and the father of her children. Years later, as she reflects upon her life, she wonders if it was the right one.
